The remarkable thing about this image is the sheaf of green corn in the saint's left hand. There is no hint of her role as a Benedictine abbess – no crozier, no religious habit. She does have the crown often seen in traditional portraits, a symbol of her membership in one of the royal families of Anglo-Saxon England.
